These engines were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the LNER, and built between 1930-1939 at Doncaster works. The two classes of engine were indistinguishable externally, the V1s were built with a boiler pressure of 180psi, the V3s had a boiler pressure of 200psi increasing the traction effort by 2496lbs. Many of the V1s were converted to V3s when they entered the works for overhauls.

These engines were designed for suburban services and were built with three cylinders to give them quick acceleration between stations on the commuter lines. They mainly worked around the LNER Glasgow and Edinburgh areas, a number also found there way to the North Eastern Region of Newcastle and Hull districts.

The 5" gauge model is based on the original V1 built in 1930, the model is fitted as per full size with 3 cylinders and Gresley's conjugated valve gear. The building of the model took about five years to complete Using the drawings from Model Engineer 1978-80. The model has been found to a good performer and like its full size sisters likes a heavy load.
