Swindon built, in small batches, from 1869 till 1899. The early engines had open cab and condensing gear, while working on the Metropolitan Railway, hence their name. Later they worked local passenger services in and around the London area. Many changes took place during their life, larger water tanks and bunkers, enclosed cabs, modified front suspension, and boilers. Last one being withdrawn in 1949.

Working to Martin Evans, 5 inch gauge design, the model is based on No 615, around the year 1910, but, with a Belpire boiler.

Having double frames, driving wheels coiled sprung, and working leaf springs for the front wheels, gives a well balanced ride. The water pump driven off a crosshead, and the emergency hand pump is fitted in the bunker. Twin cylinders, of 1 inch bore by 2 inch stroke, lubricated by hydrostatic system of Mr,F. Cottam design, makes for eye catching, and sprightly loco. Oiling the motion and wheel bearing is awkward and time consuming, best done on the bench, before going to the track
